How do you pronounce "LYRAN"?
on: 09 Feb, 2007, 17:18:27 pm
I apologize if this has been posted before but I figured a search would return too many hits as to be useless....

As the subject asks....how do you pronounce "Lyran"?
I've always pronounced it "Lie-Ran" but after seeing the first episode of the Battletech TV show where they pronounced it "Lear-An" I started questioning if I was pronouncing it correctly or not.

Lyran come from the "lyre," a musical instrument, which rhymes with "tire." So I figure, "Lie-ran."

Considering it might be related to the stellar constellation of the lyra,
I suggest it is indeed pronounced ['laɪrən], which would rhyme with the first name "Ira"...

Think it's one of the cases of inconsistencies like the one with the Davion's... think there was a discussion about that on here too...

i always say 'lieran', and since it is stated in HB:HS that the original Commonwealth flag had a lyre (the musical instrument) on it, i think that pronunciation is correct.  but hey, people pronounce tomato differently, and both versions are considered correct, so you can really go either way.

Ah, but the original Commonwealth flag was from about 500 years in the "past". I pronounce it "lear-un," as my voice is nasal enough without having to say "lie-ran." I chalk it to linguistic drift.  Wink

In the Combine, we pronounce it as "Future rightful territory of the Draconis Combine".

To be fair, though, we pronounce every realm that way. Wink

I suspect it should be "lir-an," same as lyric.  Long i for lyre, but short i for lyr- +inflection?

I never knew about the lyre.  I always made the etymological association with the 2nd branch of the Mabinogion:

"BENDIGEID VRAN, the son of Llyr, was the crowned king of this island, and he was exalted from the crown of London. And one afternoon he was at Harlech in Ardudwy, at his Court, and he sat upon the rock of Harlech, looking over the sea. And with him were his brother Manawyddan the son of Llyr, and his brothers by the mother's side, Nissyen and Evnissyen, and many nobles likewise, as was fitting to see around a king."

Yeah, but I've studied enough Welsh to know that "Llyr" is probably pronounced "Argh-wad" or something.

I've always pronounced it Leer-an. I pronounced it that way when playing Starfleet Battles and it has stuck. It probably should be Lyre-an though, given the history.
I don't know enough German to even hazard a guess at that pronunciation.

I believe Neko has it correct -- it is "lear-uhn", like lyric being pronounced "lear-ick".

It's worth pointing out again that several of the BattleTech nations are named for real-life constellations: Lyra, Crucis (Crux), Taurus, Draco.  Furthermore, Lyra really is right next to Draco (from our perspective, of course) and the Pleiades Cluster really is in Taurus.  There are also lots of things on the map that don't jibe with the real sky, but with two dimensions that can't be helped.

You don't even have to be German (like I am)... You just need to have your own North-American English language pronunciation right. Wink

Here's a link for the lot of you:
http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/cmudict

Enter the word "lyra" from which "lyran" derivates, look in the pronunciation table below, and guess what...
It's the very same phoneme like in the English word "hide".
And from my knowledge of linguistics I'd say that the [a] in "lyra" is being reduced to a schwa (/ə/) in the pronunciation of "lyran".

Saying it's "Lie-rin" because of the instrument is like saying Arkansas should be pronounced "Are-kansas" because of the river.
What river?  If you mean the Arkansas River, which begins in Leadville, CO and empties into the Mississippi, it's pronounced the same as the state.  Both are somehow derived from a phonetic spelling of the Illinois language word for Quapaw, the dominant tribe in east-central Arkansas at the time.

Here's Section 105 of Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Arkansas Code, declared in 1881 to be the correct way to pronounce the state's name:
Quote
Whereas, confusion of practice has arisen in the pronunciation of the name of our state and it is deemed important that the true pronunciation should be determined for use in oral official proceedings. And, whereas, the matter has been thoroughly investigated by the State Historical Society and the Eclectic Society of Little Rock, which have agreed upon the correct pronunciation as derived from history, and the early usage of the American immigrants. Be it therefore resolved by both houses of the General Assembly, that the only true pronunciation of the name of the state, in the opinion of this body, is that received by the French from the native Indians and committed to writing in the French word representing the sound. It should be pronounced in three (3) syllables, with the final "s" silent, the "a" in each syllable with the Italian sound, and the accent on the first and last syllables. The pronunciation with the accent on the second syllable with the sound of "a" in "man" and the sounding of the terminal "s" is an innovation to be discouraged.
