This is my unit from new LJ Campaign.
332nd Fighter Group - "The best by request"
Affiliation: Mercenary (currently on contract to the DCMS) Unit formation: March 3050 Dragoons Rating: A Unit Type: Combined Arms Regiment Tech Support Rating: 177% On All sides (Tech/Med/Admin) Unit Commander: Solomon "Sinister" Montague Unit XO: Denise "D" Lee
Units: 32nd Massachusetts "Buffalo Soilders" 2 Infantry Companies 37th Lackland Strikers "Sin's Kin" Battlemech Battalion 332nd Tuskegee Fighter Wing "The Red Tails" Aerospace Company 45th Aragon Regulars "The Alamo-city Chargers" Vehicle Battalion 4th Supply Squadron "Supply & Demand" The Support Regiment (all support personel)
History:
This unit was born of healthy competition gone bad in the rank of the AFFS. The officer families of Montague & Sandoval had been working together to strengthen the Armed Forces of Hanse Davion since the departure of the SLDF. The Great Grandfather of Solomon had told him the bitter tail. During the Bitter 3rd Succession war his academy buddy one of the Sandovals lost to the Kentares Massacre and another friend how died with the original 7th Crucis Lancers had been blamed on him. He was responsible only in assisting their transfers to the front with his training battalion for what was suppossed to be easy training work. A few weeks after landing the DCMS forces attacked by storm and razed the planet to the ground killing as many as they could find, and grand father Marcus "Mercutio" told him a curse fell upon the family. The curse was the fact they helped one another and that his father had just retired and no longer had pull in the AFFS higher ranks.
So the bitter younger Sandoval moved the case of "FORGING AFFS ORDERS AND PAPERS IN A ILLEGAL TRANSFER OF PERSONEL" to a full flegde court martial. He was demoted from his rank of Major to Captain, and then assigned him to the planet Lackland as a training instructor until he could "Redeem himself as a leader of men and as a true example of a Mechwarriors across the AFFS." His family owned property on New Aragon and he left his family with the other undisgraced members of the family still in the military. His trusty BLG-1G at his side he set off for exile. A New Avalon Noble noticed the transfer and said," I don't agree with what happened, but I can only offer your legacy a open door at the NAIS," and with that they became instant friends.
The New Avalon minor Noble was Robert Lee, a descendant of the old Terran African American Unit who had become an Aerospace Instructor at the NAIS Academy. The Sandoval-Montague Feud had simmered until the birth of Solomon's Father who ran into his rival at the NAIS. The tension was so thick it was almost a blessing that particular Sandoval moved into the Aerospace program and Darius moved to the Mechwarrior side during the end of the first year. Even seperated they competed for OCS training and both were accepted and both competited in sports, in the sims, and anywhere there paths crossed. Darius at graduation day was 1 seat higher in the ranking than the Sandoval and they both were offered speeches at the graduation. Darius took this opportunity to try to end the feud and changed his speech the day of.
"We are all proud members of a tradition, one etched in the anals of the founding of the AFFS, our families have trained, bleed, and died together in the military history which serves this great interstellar nation proud. There is no boundary we cannot soar together because each arm of the AFFS works as one in concert, given that the Battlemechs are KING of the Battlefield, without my brother in arms LT. JG Sandoval of the Aerospace ARM I would never make it to the field to fight in the name of this great nation. And with this I extend my hand to congratulate our accomplishments in the direction of being a team..."
The atmosphere was high and heavy at that moment. The Sandoval graduate was astounded and almost ashamed of his behavior of hatred toward the Montaque. He Stood saluted his training officer, and then marched to the podium and shook the hand of Darius. He then started his speech and that was almost the end of the feud. The parents of both graduates were in the audience and old feelings die hard. Especially with one grandfather in the grave and another exiled to Lackland of all places.
With the future merging of the House Steiner & Davion opportunity for politics was in the air. Darius was a Mech warrior and had pursued another aim at the NAIS. He was a mech design engineer. One of the leading into a Davion Refit using Lyran listen kill missiles before the outbreak of the 4th succession war on a secret technology exchange by both houses. The refit was first tested on his Crusader during a counter raid on a DCMS unit on the Davion - DCMS border. Upon the successful trial by fire (WITHOUT OFFICIAL APPROVAL) he was grounded and shipped out Lackland himself. Another Sandoval power play which was later discovered and repurcussions had him moved to New Avalon's R&D section to further put his talents to use. Solomon was born in 3023, a couple of years after his father had finished academy. Following in the bliss of family genetics he was in the Academy at 16, and was assigned to a Capellan march rearguard unit upon graduation. He took an old family Archer which was his great-great grandfather's which had been collecting dust. He fought in the liberation and acquisition of the Tikinov Republic, and fought alongside another Sandoval for some 4 years in his initial placement. They did not bear the family grudges and generally got along. Things took an ugly turn upon the union of the militaries. They were both officers, captains due for promotion. The commander was a friend several generations back of both families. He was dear to the Sandoval that died on Kentares. He was also one of the newly appointed (JOINT AFFS - LCAF) officers and had decisions on which officers were kept.
Solomon was one of those Montaques in the Capellan March under the thumb of the wrong Sandoval. He was transfered to the Wagonwheel TMM under orders to build it up to a "Functional and dedicated Militia in case that any pirates or sneak attacks should come from the rear of new Commonwealth." The younger Sandoval was sent to the 17th Skye Rangers. For the last two years of his commitment to the AFFS Solomon befriended officers of the TMM and the Lackland Training Core of Officers that were soon up to retirement. He saved his money, dug through the family accountants and pooled enough money to make the journey to outreach. Solomon was a business man as much as he was a mechwarrior. His early years were spent with his mother on New Aragon managing the accounts and learning the Administrative talents of his mother's side of the family. He had made several wise technology investments and amassed some shares in Technology production through his years. His father immediately took the money and pooled into the family estate saying "The money will be there when you are ready, now you need to get into the cockpit."
Solomon never abused the saved money and took it as he left. His friends that were retiring from the AFFS and LCAF before & after the merger of the kingdoms had brought unit members and other friends with them. Those that were too old for the mercenary lifestyle sent their children. Friends of his father and grandfather sent their kids that didn't want to live under the family stigma of being the whipping boys of the Sandovals either. And his inital head count on Outreach was 20 mechwarriors in his first month, a old and rusting Overlord and half of the support staff he would need. A few HPG Calls and deals would later turn into a combined arms unit from all over the Federated Commonwealth. Almost 15 Mechwarriors from Wagon Wheel and Lackland answered the call, a DCMS exile, and some Solaris (Davion) Mechwarriors rounded out the mechwarrior divison. The NAIS Noble Lee sent his grandchildren and his old retiree buddies grand kids as well who could trace their legacies back to the original 332nd fighter group and it was only a matter of time before the rest of the pieces would fall into place.
Overview: The unit took its first job on the LCAF Border with the FRR which would later become the Jade Falcon corridor of invasion. The unit was on garrision duty when the first Jade Falcons attacked. The unit was was in its last weeks of the first contract as reports were coming from planets losing contact. The emergency claused was then activated by the regional command. They fought a delaying action to help some units escape the Falcon Onslaught and were blessed in only losing a few mechs which were gladly replaced by the Fedcom commander. The unit was then released and sent back to Outreach.
The unit then moved on to a retainer contract with the Fed Com forces for several objective raids against the Jade Falcons.
Units Overview 37th Lackland Strikers "Sin's Kin" Battlemech Battalion CO: Solomon "Sinister" Montaque Veteran/Mech Battalion
Formed from his core officers and followers in his military career. This group has grown into a well oiled killing machine with 3 specialities. The first co is the Assault Company which carries the bulk of all the regiments assault mechs. The three lances are matched for speed and size and compliment each other in the laying down of heavy fire. The 1st Co also handles Assault class garrison contract as well.
2nd Company is the Jump company. The unit speciliazes in Halo, Sub-Oribt, in Orbit, and anyother high risk manner of deployment on missions. There main speciality is recon, objective, and distraction raids.
3rd Company is the heavy company where most of the other mechs and some of the remaining lighter designs have been merged into a combined general problem solving team. |

32nd Massachusetts "Buffalo Soilders" 2 Infantry Companies CO: Mike "Old Gruff" Weaver
The 32nd was the first to bear the brunt of the Clan Elementals by the entire regiment. Cut down in 3 weeks of running warfare from a battalion to two companies was the death kneel of Weaver's original independant unit. Hearing his AFFS buddy's son was building a combined arms unit lead him to strike a deal with the 332nd. The 32nd excel in mobile and jump combat. The entirety of both companies are Infantry men that have trained extensively with vehicles and jump packs. They also excel in setting extensive ambushes which have netted them the first kill of a Clan mech, albeit a light clan mech they were the first to bring down a Omnimech.
332nd Tuskegee Fighter Wing "The Red Tails" Aerospace Wing (22 Fighters) Unit CO: Major Denise "D" Lee
The 332nd wing is comprised of history from the original all African American fighter squadrons in the ancient terran Army Air Core. Half of the members of the unit can trace their lineage all the back to the units founders and the rest trace theirs back to the SLDF days of which similiar squadrons were built. "D" built the unit from her academy as well as her officer days in the AFFS. She also graduated from New Avalon in the aerospace program but was never a friend of the sandovals. Originally the overall unit had two wings, one was wiped on the second contract to the fedcom. The unit has been relisted as a wing with 105% due to the 2 extra fighters (the only survivors of the run in with the infamous Falcon Keshik Aerospace detachment). The unit has also lost the Vengeance Class "Joker" which was assigned to them on that objective raid. The Falcon Keshik destroyed while it was attached to a Fedcom Merchant Class dropship and only half of the fighters had deployed. The survivors were absorbed into the reformed wing. The original commander died on the bridge of the Joker.
45th Aragon Regulars "The Alamo-city Chargers" Vehicle Battalion CO: Jose "Pedro the Surfer" Sanchez
The Chargers can trace their history back to a semi-professional football team coached by a Montaque on Anceint Terra. The descendants of the team became tankers when they didn't enjoy the emergence of the Battlemech. As friends of the Montaque family they fell under the radar of hate from the Sandovals and were also exiled to Lackland. Taking advice to purchase second hand 3025 vehicles and refurbish them with recent star league tech has contributed to the punch of the Chargers. They lost 20 of 24 VSTOLs when they were assigned to a LCAF Dropship that was lost in orbit on the same objective raid against the falcons.
4th Supply Squadron "Supply & Demand" The Support Regiment (all support personel) CO: Captain Reynaldo "Ray the Roughneck" Morales
These are some of the best and "Worst disiciplined Graduates ever from the NAIS & Other Tech Schools in the NAIS" form the core of the support group for the 332nd FG. This group of kids and their instructors were those officially discharged from Military service for any reason stampable on a record. The leader of the Mechanics pool was discharged dishonorably for "Having Inappropriate relations with a superiors officer's wife and daughter" and he smiled as he headed for outreach only to run into D and her band of misfits. The 4th Supply is descended from those hard cases and "Political Degenerates" who were the best in thier respective classes with a set of tools and crunch time mentalities. At the time the NAIS only wanted the "Best of the Intellectuals and the Politically Astuate" and the 4th Cadet Training group found themselves a one way ticket after some of their party hijinks landed them in a world of trouble.
The roughneck himself had already made preparations for his group as they barely academically escaped the university grounds and they had all made preparations for the life on the edge.
Second Contract: Extraction Raid & Diversionary Raid Alpha Phi Upsilon
Target Planet: Wotan Objective: Implant Additional Guerilla forces while rescuing Fedcom Personnel... From the Journal of Solomon April 1st, 3051
The mission of insertion worked. We rolled out of a pirate point and sped hard for the planet. My group was in orbit ready and prepped for HALO for rapid reinforcements of any landing parties in trouble. It was too easy, these invaders from some other galaxy that were eating planet after planet without mercy and without a face were making me sick. I saw one with my own eyes. That damn toad thing the scientists were so happy to get from the Somerset Strikers. I respect Adam, but I have never met him. I just look at him like he was another Sandoval. Upset and Jealous, and looking for a way to get even. Even forging a rag tag band of Dracs and Feds together to do it...whatever. This was a real mission.
The Joker was kept on station as another reinforcement for the 96th, Cooper was running that show over there. His Son Derrick was on my ship in my aerospace lance. I hated riding company transport but the lyrans wouldn't have it any other damn way and they went to the Nadir point. I could see it out the corner of my port hole and it was just another green blip on my bridge's radar display. 11 hours into the mission then it hits the fans..."Colonel Solomon sir multiple Jump sigs, a warship is on the display!" The warning sirens were blaring through the ship and I was off to the mechbay to prep for any emergency. I hit my comlink:
"This is Sinister CO, Say Again!" "Sir we have a warship, a FALCON WARSHIP on the display, it looks like a york class and we count 2 Falcon Invader classes...oh my god....no...." "Sitrep, keep it together Corporal, give me a damn report!" "Sir, they have jumped and surrounded the Joker and the Lyran jumpship, our sensors report 30 falcon fighters in the air and the warship is training guns on the Joker...Joker launching fighters....oh my god..."
A heavy boom and shockwave knocked me to the deck of the hall...I hit my head and dropped my nuerohelmet. I was pissed as blood was rolling down my face.
"What the F...is going on out there corporal?" "The Lyran Jumpship and the Joker just exploded, as did the Lyran supply ship...there is no one left...we only counted 2 fighters from the joker landing in our bay...Sir, all hands lost on the Joker...all."
I killed the com link and a tear rolled down my cheek. Everyone passing through in the hall had heard the news and we were hurting. We had in a 3 minutes lost 65 friends and family members. Not a chance, no fair warning. Some idiot lyran bigshot calling the shots cost us dearly. The lyran commander punched me up on the link, "Colonel Montaque, we have a situation. We have to abandon our mission and those on the planet or we are finished here." "No Kommandant we are not leaving those on the ground. My fighters can hold those clanners off and my Lance will assist in the ground clean up, Montaque out." "That's against orders, I am in charge here, we leave them or we all die." "Shove your orders, I have the last jumpship in system that is friendly, if you don't like it take an escape pod."
That is how we ended the mission. The rest of the fighters made sure our dropships made it safely from the planet. Strangely the Falcons only wanted to hold the Nadir point. They saw the white flags painted onto the transports which were carrying civies and our wounded and they did nothing. My lance didn't have to halo out in orbit to support. The Fedcom (mostly lyran) forces on planet we later learned have been "re-educated" and the rebels executed. What a damned butcher bill...That was the end of that contract and I wanted some clan payback. Not for the lyrans who were willing to sacrifice anyone, but somewhere else
Our forces on the planet had managed to knock out a Clan Mech star via a well planned ambush and we took several clan mechs intact. Because we only have 50% salvage rights we took the Mad Cat, and Masakari, while the Fed Com commander took the Daishi, Thor, and Gladiator. We felt shafted but knew we would get another shot at the clans and there tech somewhere else.
.
August 1 3051 we had signed a 1 year retainer contract with the DCMS after the "DEATH TO MERCS" thing was officially out. Since we were a moderate profile unit we wouldn't be "DOING THINGS UNSEEN" by the rest of the world. Then the clans came knocking and we were shifted directly to Luthien. We even managed to twist the arm of another unit and buy there salvaged clan mechs off of them bringing us to 4 at the time.
DCMS: Retainer (Heavy Anti-Clan Expected) 12 months. House Command rights. Full overhead compensation. 60% salvage, 50% battle loss compensation. Pay Modifier: 6.1. 60% Transport re-imbursement. Your unit will be operating in the Ghost Bear & Smoke Jaguar/Nova Cat areas.
Luthien....the results (Fluff later...I am dead tired and no more typing while sick...)
Yamagata Town (30 Klicks east of the imperial city) Nova Cat Forces Command Star: Black Hawk, VET Dragonfly, Reg Dragonfly A, Reg Koshi, Reg Koshi B, Reg

Lance 2: Pheonix Hawk* Elite Pheonix Hawk* Elite Wasp* Vet Stinger* Vet
Lance 3: Assassin* Elite Spider* Elite Spider* Vet Spider* Vet
Artillery Lance Detachment (2 Arrow IV Carriers: 4 Launchers total)
Results...
In the opening volley both the Stinger & Wasp were cored with Clan ER PPCS through the center torso. Both pilots ejected. The first cauldron born alpha striked ending the life of the pilot of the assassin in lance 3 instantly. The Guass Rifle ripped through his cockpit instantly. Never had a chance. The rest of the clanners fired and missed wildly against the smoke and chaos.
Turn 2 the Jump CO had recieved fire support from the Art lance detachment. The spiders of Lance 3 had TAG units and moved as practiced to set up homing attacks. The Nova cats had moved into a parade formation down a tight street leaving openings at random places. Converging through the smoke the first and second spiders had cornered the first loki. 4 Missiles slammed into it, 2 burrowing through the center torso and out the back of the mech. It stopped almost standing upright and then fell forward with a gapping hole where its engine and gyro housing once were. This caused the rest of the star to turn about and change directions. Command and Lance 2 were busy dealing with the fast moving command star and trying to corner off the dragonflies. The command lance managed to surround the Koshis and fire everything into them ripping off shards of ammo, lucky shots on the lead koshi blew out its engine from a backshot. The Koshi locked up in mid run and slid into a building. The pilot escaped. The other Koshi caught an ER PPC to its Center torso from the XO'S Wolverine, causing two engine hits and a gyro hit, then the Assassin attached to the command lance kicked it, instantly crumpling the already damaged leg. The Pilot ejected and was captured. Then the Black Hawk alpha striked the assassin in the back hitting ammo bins which instantly killed the pilot and destroyed the mech...
Turn 3 The Black Hawk severely overheat jumped away and out of the range of engagement....the second and third loki swung back around after trying to escape the spiders. They turned there sights on the closest mechs in the command lance and destroyed the Dervish and one of the pheonix hawks. DCMS reinforcements were ETA'D at 2 minutes. The Spiders got one tag on the lagging loki and awaited the surprise. Another 4 successful missile shots, one slammed into a leg, an arm, the rear right torso, and the last one exploded against the back of the loki's head...and it stopped still.
Turn 4
The Other Dragonfly firing its PPC and jumping had also overheated but the pilot kept in the fight. His pulse lasers raked armor and caused some annoyances on the remaining Dervish. But the pilot ignored him, he focused on the Cauldron Born coming to great him head on. The Spiders circled around the back of the 'Born waiting for another barrage to drop in. The rest of the jump co formed up to support the charge against the Cauldron Born. With the lighter clan mechs gone and only 3 left it was time to kill the biggest one first.
The Cauldron fired its PPCS into the Dervish hoping for an easy kill only to destroy an arm and melt more armor and knock it down. The rest of the jump company returned the favor lighting him up with medium lasers and some heavier weapons. Then it was time for the artillery, it slammed into the cauldron born from behind...instantly silencing the Clan XL Engine and forcing it to the ground.
Then the dragonfly pilot knew it was over and tried to escape only to be cut down by the spiders in a 5 minute run to freedom...which ended the defense of Yamagata town.

There's only one unit that I don't understand...
...the 32nd Massachusetts. I'm assuming the 32nd dates back to the American Civil War.
Was the 32nd more prestigious than the 54th Massachusetts? |
However, this question is somewhat outside the scope of the original question, because we are judging Successor Lords by what they did, not by whether they might have avoided a hypothetical assassination by ninjas.

| No, they were swept under the rug and used as replacement roster for the 54th survivors. So I just took the underdogs on this one. |

Oh.
Kind of like how the 442nd was initially used as a training cadre for the 100th Infantry Battalion. Hmm... |

A Letter home...
June 3052 Intercepted by ISF Agents, later declassified
To my wife, joining the unit may have been one of the best decisions in my life. It is also one of the hardest. Since we arrived on Luthien the war sirens have never taken a day off. If we aren't in briefings we are on patrols. Otherwise we are in the bunks. The "REAL" DCMS troops get dorms and comfortable housing. We "un-desirables" are kept in our dropships on seperate ends of the base. The pay is good. At least it isn't "Blind" to the price we pay in blood. The regiment commander Montague takes care of us. We have the best of everything in this job. The only people that suffer is the enemy he constantly jokes.
But it is true. All of our mechs are outfitted with the best tech available if not the best Clan salvage. I am tired of the clans though. They can't catch a hint. We stopped them cold in Yamagata. We pounded them from start to finish. It was hellish, like your mother's easter suprise. My first mech got shot out from under me as well. I thought being dispossessed was next, but the commander came by in my cot in the med bay and and chatted with me. The commander looks a lot bigger in the war room and briefings but he's only 5'9 at best! That cracked me up. He smiled at me and asked me how I was doing.
"Sir, I'm okay but that Crusader is down, and not coming back anytime soon. I am sorry about that." "No Vasquez, screw the mech. Good people are hard to come by. A mech is a mech, hell have you seen the stuff we have in the salvage hanger?" "No, what do you we got?" "3 Clan mechs you have official kills for. They belong to the unit, but the kills are yours." "What are you talking about? I couldn't see anything through the smoke and fire after I punched out..." "Take it easy, lie back, look. You were hired because you survived some of the worse fights in the war of 39 and up til now." "What do you mean?" "Your lance is being rebuilt, and you are going back into another Crusader until we figure out a way to setup sim runs for some of the newer clan mechs we got." "Seriously, I thought I was fired." "Don't be an idiot, good people are hard to find....and harder to keep alive without Mechs that work." "You will be assigned the Marauder II until we get the new mechs up and going. Consider it a temporary re-assignment to Assault Company."
I struggled to salute and failed as the cast bandages kept me at a 30 degree angle. He smiled at me. The kid is young too, I thought he was at least 45 or pushing. He is 28, his birthday is a few months out. This kid has the smarts and backing to build a regiment over a 2 year period that has survived some of the worst of the clans coming to the sphere. He stood up, saluted, and told me to get some sleep. He left a folder and said the nurse will catch you up later.
In the morning the nurse came by, gave me the good painkillers and sat me up. It took two of the new nurses we got, yeah your cooking keeps me heavy. The folder had details of the kills, and who survived the fighting, most of the guys made it. Romero, one of the new kids fresh from that academy on Somerset died in the fighting. The Turkina caught him while he was shut down and jumped on him literrally. It crushed his cockpit and then shot at me. I put everything I had into him while it was PPC that blew through his cockpit avenging Romero. God, I just met that kid before we got the boat landing on Luthien. 24, just married, and escaping being some paper pushing noble by being a Mech Jock in a merc unit. It hurts.
Well, his wife is a Mech Jock as well. She is taking his spot. Assault company has had its hands busy, I saw two of them in body bags. Half of their mechs are down. At the funeral my company commander said the eulogy. Then Montague got on stage.
"This is a hard day for the 332nd. We are laying some of the best in the unit to rest. Sadly that vacation is permenant. We will march on. The Clans hate us. The clans spit on us. The clan mechwarriors you beat changed their tune once they understood we are mercenaries. They wanted to fight along side you and beg to be a part of the family. This border we protect and the battles we fight are not just in our mechs or across the pay line. The battles are in our souls, we are part of history in the making, yet our beds are in our dropships away from the regular line troops we support. We eat in seperate facilities because we aren't good enought to eat with them. We are outcasts. When the books are written about who fell here the truth will show that through out the "Seperate But Equal" treatment of "Professional Soilders" the 332nd met and bested some of the best Clanners in the galaxy. The books will show that 4 were laid to rest and the unit marched on. This isn't some inspirational speech to make you all smile, this is the cold hard truth. We are the best and being the best sometimes will come at the ultimate price and I will gladly lead you into the battle and lay my life down right next to yours."
With that everyone stood and saluted. Montague saluted. Then we collected our fallen and buried them in full honors. I just hope when my time comes I will be at his side. I love you. See you soon. |

A Letter from the front - Hyner August 3052 Smoke Jag OZ
Hey Dad,
This is one of the those days where bed and more beer would have been better. Today we lost four pilots and only managed to kill 3 of the clanners. They give as good as they get if not better. Well Salvage was nice as well. The mission was a smash and grab and it was a hard one. We were to take out a thorn in the side from the DCMS. This Jag unit had been making headaches for DCMS Guerilla ops in the area. They had flushed cells up and down the border and crushed them.
The Smoke Jags hadn't made any new friends with the Turtle bay incident. Well no one friends in warfare. We missed the dropship. Our contacts made sure that the warships were not in orbit. We landed dead center into their base and things got ugly fast. The Atlas landed a little closer to the enemy than we had planned and he got pasted in the exchange. He lost most of his armor, suffered a ammo hit, got knocked down. We responded by pasting 3 of their mechs in the opening volley. We nailed one of the light mechs and two of the Lokis.
We ignored the batchall crap as usual, we weren't playing nice to be backstabbed later. It was War. Martinez was in the forward ATLAS, and it wasn't long before he had gone down. The command Daishi had dug itself into a mini-crater hoping it would shield him from the command lance...they blew his face off and his mech fell forward. Things were just hellish, the smoke from weapons, the explosions and the deaths. I took a shot to the head and passed out...I woke up as the last few clan mechs were on the ropes.
I drilled in a nice alpha strike ending the second Daishi. Everyone else in the lance had forgotten about me. Then they noticed the dead daishi. I got a field commendation. My Lance commander is dead so I am getting promoted. I am not thrilled about it. But it is life. A lot better pushing paper back home on Hesperus II as a noble's son or heir to the throne. My regiment commander Montague is issuing me the new Daishi. We salvaged enough parts to slap in a targeting computer. So I am okay about that. I lost most of my poker buddies today.
Most of my friends lost today were about my age and skill level. My Lance commander had survived the initial thrust of the Jade falcons. He wanted to avenge his brother, and now he won't get to do it. War is hell, but home is boring. I don't know what to think. I am in the ship med bay writing this. I broke my arm when my mech fell. But it is okay. Miller got mauled and it was a ugly way to go in a battlemaster.
I love you Dad, keep Tyler in college.
Love Patrick |

Patrick's Diary Sept 1st 3052 Outreach Dormitory 332nd Hangers
Today I feel like crap. The new Daishi handles worse than a atlas, I feel twice in the bastard so far. It takes a lot of work to keep it up and moving. Ever since they removed the damned XL Engine it is had new pains to keep balance. I am not a frakin engineer and I won't understand all the pinball mech technobable anyway. They loaded me up on pulse lasers and a targeting computer. Some jump jets and then sent me off to the testing grounds.
The Colonel and the Major reorganized my company. So now we are riding just two lances. 3 out of the 4 mechs that feel have been repaired. The Stalker was hammered so badly they just took what they could and threw the rest of it out of the air lock. God. We captured one of those clanners and all he could talk about is, "What clan am I apart of now? Who is my bond cord holder? Where do I get the chance to prove my worth?" I just told him to shut up. I don't understand the clans. We were happy to hand him off to the DCMS Liasion waiting on him.
I heard the scuttlebutt of Clan warriors buying passage to Outreach to join other units. I find it all hard to believe. Comstar letting there new kittens go? I call both Jags and Nova Cats kittens because that is how they act when blown out of their mechs. I am so sick of being on the boot of a DCMS command liasion. "Go Here, Fight There, Don't you speak Japanese?" I wanted to step on her. I reallly wanted one of those new Mad Cats. The Daishi sucks. Granted I am the only one that will ever read this journal, but I hate it. Its slower than the Zeus, it has just as much armor as an Atlas, but I prefer the quick hit and go approach. The only thing making me smile is the Targeting Computer. I used it in the sims today. Ripped a leg fresh off a Atlas, then burned through its torso to silence the XL Engine. That would have been another beautiful mech salvaged by me...
Well the Admin arm of the unit is sending me replacements soon. Vasquez refused his promotion to LT in Heavy CO. He says he isn't ready to make the hard decisions yet. I don't blame him, half of my lance is gone and now I am responsible for everyone. God, I am only 27. I just found out I am a year younger than the big boss. We were both in the last scraps of the 3040's. What am I doing here? Me & Vasquez have been playing poker lately, all he talks about is Miller. Miller and him had served together before going Merc. I just met Miller...
I just want to survive the rest of the "Clan War" as the media calls it. I keep hearing about units that get wiped to the man by the Ghost Bears. Others that take prisoners through them into the labor caste cleaning latrines. The only ones who show Mercs any form of respect are the Wolves. Funny we haven't met any in combat. And I don't think we will get the chance. Intel says the heat from the Kittens is relaxing. We are taking a job that keeps us away from the Clans. Can't wait for that news to be official. Well the pain killers are kicking...
Pat...PS if any of the old heads in my company refer to me as "Patches" I am throwing them all out the damn airlock! |

Interview: Co Montague & Mercs Associated Press May 3054 Outreach - Harlech Office
Reporter - "This is a live broadcast from our offices, good afternoon Colonel Montague of the 332nd combat group. Thank you for joining us."
Montague - "Thank you, it is nice to be here."
Reporter "Well we are curious about your recent string of success with good contracts, large salvage of Clan tech, and the amount of casualties that don't deter you from your dangerous out takings as of late...any comment to these rumors?"
Montague - "War comes with prices, and as a mercenary was is our business, our craft, and sometimes making a profit comes at a cost. Sadly some of my best mechwarriors have lost thier lives. Our Clan tech is taken from good contracts with good employers and understandings. Understandings being contracts that offer up the bounty for a good unit with a good reputation. That is all."
Reporter - "But your assault company is on contract, and is short a lance, will that hinder there ability to perform thier contract?"
Montague - "No, it won't. My lance is supplementing them until our new hires have completed the interview process and can be assigned mechs."
Reporter - "Isn't it true that your unit has a large number of unassigned vehicles?"
Montague - "Yes. We have a small number of unassigned vehicles waiting for the proper moment for the entire unit to expand"
Reporter - "Really? A confirmed source, a certain Marik Nobleman says your unit refused his contract because you personally couldn't handle the stress."
Montague - "I would call your source a liar. I refused his contract on the grounds that it doesn't place me in a neutral position to the Federated Commonwealth. He wanted me directly to contribute to actions that would spark a considerable border dispute. I will ask you to move to the next question."
Reporter - "Okay, why this obsession with the clans? What have they done to you? Isn't true your unit has a clan mechwarrior in it? The very people you have vowed to destroy in the your quest for vengeance? any truth in that?"
Montague - "I want the cutting edge in Battletechnology. The Jade Falcons destroyed a wing of 332nd Aerospace Fighters and there carrier along with the unit. I had only 2 pilots survive the encounter. I am not personally obsessed with the Clans overall. I pick my fights and win where I can. Fold where I cannot. I haven't had to fold in 3 years. We do have an Ex-Wolf Clan mechwarrior in my unit. We welcomed him because other units wouldn't hire him. He has proven to be a stought and dignified warrior and that is what we respect. You seem to only have rumors to fuel this interview...if there is nothing else we can conclude it."
Reporter - "No not just rumors. Why is it that your infantry units seem to decline during 'Standard Training Operations and Training Duty'...and why is that they aren't being replaced?"
Montague - "The smaller infantry assets of the combat group have been assigned to long term contracts up to and including protecting viable assets of our client. Again how we conduct business and asses our forces is an internal matter...so good day."
Montague got up and left the on-air room with a soft smile and his suit tucked in. He knew the reporter was an undercover agent for someone in power just trying to push his buttons. The new pilots for Assault company had been hired, they were going through background checks, and then would join up with assault company. His master plan of crushing that Falcon cluster had become a known public incident thanks to that bastard Lyran liasion officer. Solomon smilled knowing his day would come again. Alas, back to the hanger, grease, and getting that Daishi up and running without the XL weight.
Patches is a clusmy kid. |
