Day 0: Origins 2007 Update: Day 1 : Day 2 : Day 3 : Wrap up
on: 04 Jul, 2007, 23:02:47 pm
http://www.evilnet.net/

Hi guys.  I pretty much never let anyone know that I was going to Origins (mostly because I wasn't).  But here I am anyhoo!

Pics when the opportunity arises!

BED!  SLEEP!  NOW!

*** Update: Day 1***

Pics have I!  Keep coming back to this link for updates throughout and after the con

Sorry about the pics being overexposed and/or blurry.  In my rush to attend a convention I wasn't supposed to, I forgot my regular camera.  Luckily, my roomate brought a camera (pics will be forthcoming after the con), and I have a camera attachment for my laptop.  Takes big pictures, but in high-light situations, they fade out.

Anyhoo, AAR for day 1.  Fairly busy at the booth.  Origins usually isn't a very busy con for exhibitors, it's a gaming con and a time for the exhibitors to make contact with each other (as GenCon is just too darn big and hectic for this).  Even so, we had LOTS of people by the booth today.

Lots of interest in the new products coming out for both CBT and Shadowrun.  And LOTS of kudos on the new boxed set.  My pics really don't do it justice.  The minis are just SWEET (they make the plastic minis of the 3rd Edition Boxed Set look...well, you can fill it in).  The distributors and exhibitors can't wait to get it in, and the gamers can't wait to get their hands on it.

That and lots of 'splainin' about exactly who and what Catalyst Game Labs is.  But hey, people are attentive, and even interested sometimes.

Oh yes.  And I need to put in a big thanks to my day-job employers for not only letting me come, in light of the RIDICULOUSLY last-minute nature of my request (approximately 36 hours notice), but actually continuing to pay me (NOT vacation pay) and putting me up in a hotel on their dime.  As someone said two years ago at GenCon, I have the coolest bosses EVER!

Now I'm going to lay down for a little bit and prop my feet up as, after a day of standing on a thinly carpeted concrete floor, everything in my legs below the knees is at roughly the consistency of pudding.

Maybe later I'll catch the Die Hard film or something.

Already saw Transformers.  TWICE.  Just something about giant robots....

*** Day 2 ***

Well, caught Die Hard.  It was okay.

Had a bit of late night shopping to do, so I got up late the next morning.

Anyhoo, the booth was a bit busier yesterday.  We actually had a lot more in the way of sales yesterday.

I didn't get much of a chance to snap pics though.  Sorry!  Don't kill me!

I'll get a few more for Day 3.

The CBT events were still busy as hell (yay!)

Late night for me though.  Dave went on his first Shadowrun last night, and lots of "shop talk" (some of which you guys will eventually hear, some of which I gotta STFU about).

What's up with FanPro Catalyst Game Labs seminar at noon today.  Have to see whether I'm tapped for booth duty at the time.

***Day 3***

Otay buttwheat.  A relatively short day for me.

Woke up late and hustled my big behind down to the convention center (conveniently leaving my PC cam in the room, and couldn't get a hold of my roomate to grab his).

So no pics of the seminar itself.

 Angry

WAS able to grab the regular camera later and snap some pics of the active minis area.

Bye!

...
...
...

Oh, you wanted a "what's up" recap?

Well why didn't you say so!  You didn't have to tie my legs into such intricate knots...

Okay, what I'm telling you here is pretty much everything that's been cleared for public consumption.  Beyond that, I gotta stay  Lips Sealed

You're going to get some SR stuff in here too, because some of it does cover both.

Okay.

#1: It's now Catalyst Game Labs.  We're doing Shadowrun and BattleTech.
#2: NO, there's NOT going to be a new "5th Edition" of SR or a new "Even More Revised And Changed" ruleset for CBT.  We've got pretty much all the same people we did before on development.
#3: We've doubled staff at Catalyst (to Dave Stansel-Garner and Adam Jury).  May the gods have mercy on...aw hell with it!    Azn
#4: Due out at GenCon.  Total Warfare reprint (complete with erratta fixes), Tech Manual, The Boxed Set, and Sword and Dragon.
#5: Policy now is to try to announce a product much closer to it's actual release date, rather than spewing a calendar for X-number of products and then missing dates  (not to mention months) of X-1 of them.  This way, as CGL gets production smoothed out and starts hitting deadlines, you'll see a much steadier stream of news about stuff coming out.  Rather than hearing about a cool product 18 months in advance, griping that it hasn't shipped 12 months later, and griping after if finally DOES ship 6 months after that.
#6: The Holostreets site is finally going to start getting off the ground.  The actual format of Holostreets is going to differ from BattleCorps markedly.  Simply doing "BattleCorps for Shadowrun" wouldn't serve the community at all, and it'd tank.  CGL knows this.  However, there are plans in the works for some extremely cool stuff.  Some of which may eventually work it's way back into BattleCorps.  And that's not to say that Holostreets will take NOTHING from BattleCorps.  There is several years of experience running the site at this point, and a much clearer idea of exactly what it takes to do it successfully.

That was really about all the major information imparted.

Yes, I know it isn't a lot.  More info will come when it can be given to you.

Oh, and a copy of the boxed set went to the Charity Auction for the Make-A-Wish Foundation today as well.  So some lucky so-and-so gets to go home with his very own boxed set.

AND IT AIN'T ME!

 Cry

*** Day 4 (5 actually)***

And that's a wrap folks.  I'm thrashed.  Got the rest of my pics up.

Tear-down took us about an hour and a half all-told (from close of con to unloading the last few boxes we didn't ship to GenCon at Dave's hotel room.

After that, dinner.  Amazing how non-crowded things are after the con is over, though the poor folks at Max and Erma's were still fragged too.  Our waitress had to be asked for things multiple times and still forgot stuff.

Oh, and to whomever found the cookies we left there, enjoy them.

I'll snap a couple of these on the morrow.  I just spent most of my day in the CGL booth and my legs are going *squish* when I walk on them right now.

Hopefully my initial pics will tide you over.

As noted though, the CBT events were crazy-busy today.  When you have to split what's normally one big event tables into TWO big event tables and it's STILL 18 per table...

Almost nothing but kudos over the boxed set (the “almost” is only because of one guy who owns every book in existence already NOT understanding that the “INTRODUCTORY” boxed set is NOT aimed at him).

Who was this guy?  I still want the box set because it will look nice in my collection.

Like Hell that set won't be good for those who own every other product. More maps! The spiffy-keen quick-start rules! A quick guide to Total Warfare rules! And...TWENTY-FOUR MINIATURES! Hell, even a 3067 map of the Inner Sphere to replace every other one I've lost.

Quick question:  which mapsheets come with it?

Well it was pretty even looking at the kills between the Allies and Wobbies.  The end of the game saw massive Allied victories on both boards with them rolling the Wobbies up by the end.

The most amusing thing from the big game was that one Bandit full of freed PoWs got immmobilized seventeen hexes from the edge it was supposed to escape off of.  The PoWs bailed out, and spent the next seventeen turns fleeing.  They only lost two out of the twenty-eight guys to a pair of medium lasers off the Malek.  It was simply amazing.

Yes. FASA's BattlePack: Fourth Succession War included a map ("Scattered Woods", IIRC) that didn't make it into either of the Map Set Compilations. Not a big deal, really, as it was fairly uninteresting terrain, but I thought this would be a good place to put it.

The Aerotech 2 game: Hunting the Hunters, was also very good. We only had a couple of players, but the action was exciting. The Blakist raiding squadron was hit hard from the very beginning, losing DropShips nearly every turn. While the Inner Sphere force was assembled from at least four difference of the Great Houses, they managed to continue the fight, killing a Jihadist Vincent and Sovietskii Soyuz and driving off a Cameron while losing only one of the friendly WarShips; a Kirishima class cruiser.  A pair of Overlords achieved the coup d'grace against the Vincent.

All that I can say about WarShip play during the conventions.....MORE!!!.....MORE!!!.....MORE!!!

Now if I can just remember next year not to get in close with an Osirus versus a King Crab during the Inner Sphere Grand Melee..... Kind of hard to remember when you have an ace player chasing you with a Wraith however.

Actually the map was Woodland and it appeared in Mapset #6 and Mapset Compilation #2.  The Luthien scenario pack had a map that I do not think was reprented anywhere else.
